Erika Cholich is a local Sydney artist who has been recent finalist in the 2022 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize, the 2022 Burwood Art Prize, the 2021 Hawkesbury Art Prize and the 2019 Archibald Prize, at the Art Gallery of NSW. Erika Cholich works in oil paint directly from life, primarily in the still-life and portraiture genres. She describes her practice of engaging with the subject as an important aspect of her creative process.
Working from life forces the artist to contend with limitations and is experiential and transient in nature. Outcomes are dependent on 'real-time' factors, notes Erika. I am interested in capturing life and translating its intangible energy onto canvas.
Erika Cholich employs a combination of technical skill, with intuitive mark making, always searching for a balance of the known and the perceived.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio (USA), Erika Cholich completed the Master of Arts in Art Education from Case Western Reserve University and The Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Ohio (USA) and working in the studio of well recognised American artist, Shirley Aley Cambell. She received the Eva L. Pancoast Memorial Fellowship for further studies which she undertook in Prague (Czech Republic) before living around the world and settling in Sydney.
