acrylic, oil stick , thread on recycled vintage pillowcase. 79 x 61 cm. Unframed.
“This work seeks to communicate the emotional connection to my female ancestors and their craft and textile practices. Expressive paint marks that bring out the history of the material are responded to by cross stitches on the reversed pillowcase. The decision to invert the fabric corresponds with my intention to subvert the medium of needlework to communicate my disagreement with the patriarchal context ofmy family. My role is that of a balancing act between the past and present, wanting to make sure that the presence and craft ofmy female ancestors come alive iand challenges gendered hierarchy of art materials.” ~ Monika Cvitanovic Zaper, 2021
