Silver Liberty 2020

Silkscreen, acrylic and spray paint on Belgium Linen. 62 x 65cm.
“Investigation of the coin as a marker of historical materiality passing from one hand to the next like a baton, commenced with the inheritance of personally collected coins during the WW2 era by my Ukrainian grandfather, who escaped Europe by dressing as a Nazi soldier… coins have been shaved, rubbed, dropped, stolen, lost and carried around to exchange for objects of desire and throughout their existence they are continually and uniquely marked. The past, present and future of global Currency is now in question. The scale of Liberty has been exaggerated to life-size proportions and the solid metal substrate of the coin has been transferred to the tactile, soft surface of Belgium Linen.” ~ Renee Henzel 2021
